Free sample lesson, module 1 of 6
Clarity over cleverness. One audience. One action.
What this module is about
Before any colours, fonts, or page builders, your website needs a strategy you can write on a napkin. Who is it for. What is the one thing you want them to do. Why will they trust you in the first 5 seconds. This module is the part of website building most small businesses skip, which is exactly why so many small business sites quietly underperform.
The lesson
A great small business website is not the one with the smoothest scroll animation. It is the one a tired buyer can land on, understand in 5 seconds, and act on in 30. Everything else is decoration.
The 5-second test is the only opinion that matters. Open your website on a phone, in a coffee shop, on a slow connection, in front of someone who has never heard of you. Can they answer 3 questions in 5 seconds. What is this. Who is it for. What do I do next. If any of those answers are missing or fuzzy, that is the work to do before any redesign.
Pick one audience. Most small business websites try to speak to everyone and end up speaking to no one. If you serve homeowners and commercial clients, two pages. If you serve Brisbane and Sydney, two location pages. The homepage's job is to land the most important audience and convert them. Other audiences get their own pages.
Pick one primary action per page. The homepage of a service business almost always has the same primary action: book a call, get a quote, or join a waitlist. The other actions exist (read the blog, learn more, see prices) but they are visually secondary. Every section should support the primary action.
Trust signals matter and not all of them are equal. Real testimonials with real names and real results, photos of your team in your venue, named clients you have worked with, specific case studies with numbers, and your ABN/registration where relevant beat stock photography and 'awards' badges every time. A real face is worth more than a generic 5-star strip.
